Racism against Lewis Hamilton in Spain reared its ugly head again yesterday when the BBC broadcast pictures of a fan at the Circuit de Catalunya before the Spanish Grand Prix sporting a blacked-up face in imitation of the world champion.
The spectator, who was filmed in a merchandising area of the circuit among a group of supporters thought to be Spanish, was apparently being allowed to roam freely despite undertakings from the Spanish authorities to the FIA that any such behaviour would not be tolerated.
The individual was white, but had blacked-up his face, hands and forearms. He was wearing a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes T-shirt and carrying a Formula One-style steering wheel with the Vodafone logo in the middle. Fans around him waved at the camera and made thumbs-up signs.
The FIA said last night: “We are aware of it and we are looking into it.” After a similar incident on a larger scale during a pre-season testing session in February last year, the Spanish motor racing authorities were warned by the FIA that they could face losing the race in Barcelona if there was any repeat of such conduct.
